What is SD-WAN?
SD-WAN is the evolution of how WAN services are delivered, encompassing a greater range of features, simplified network management and cost savings due to optimizations in traffic routing.

SD-WAN is an overlay network which transposes itself over top of your existing Internet and/or MPLS Networks. It differs from traditional routing technologies as it supports the simultaneous use of multiple different paths in order to optimize end-to-end communication.
How does it work?
SD-WAN deployments consist of a core controller that manages remote sites. Here is a breakdown of the interactions:
- Upon boot, the SD-WAN edge registers its outside IP address to the controller
- The controller dynamically learns the local routing prefixes available to each edge node
- The controller will then determine the optimal routing strategy for each edge node, if multiple links exist, it can route based on availability, response time, network congestion, application classes and other complex factors
- The controller sends the best prefixes together with transport network next hops to SD-WAN edge node
